Landline Problems and How to Fix Them
Here’s a quick guide to help fix common problems for both household and business phone lines.
Some Quick Phone Checks, to Rule Out Common Mistakes
- If the phone is cordless, check it’s fully charged
- Check the cord is correctly plugged into the back of the phone and the socket
- If your house has a double phone socket make sure you’re using this to connect your broadband
- If you don’t have a double socket, make sure to use a microfilter on all of your sockets, where you need a connection
I Can’t Make Phone Calls
- Unplug everything that’s plugged into your phone sockets, TV boxes, fax machines etc.
- Plug a corded phone into the master socket (the master socket is the first socket where the phone line enters your home).
- Try to make a call.
If you now make a call, the problem will be wiring, microfilters or a device in your home.
To find the culprit, plug in one device at a time and make a test call. Repeat this with every device, checking for a dial tone each time, until you find the one that’s causing the problem.
If you still can’t make a call after these steps, you must contact your phone provider, who will check the external line.

My Phone Has No Dial Tone
- Unplug everything that’s plugged into your phone sockets, TV boxes, fax machines etc.
- Plug a corded phone into the master socket (the master socket is the first socket where the phone line enters your home).
- Try to make a call.
If you now hear a dial tone, the problem will be wiring, microfilters or a device in your home.
To find the culprit, plug in one device at a time and check for a dial tone. Repeat this with every device, checking for a dial tone each time, until you find the one that’s causing the problem.
If you don’t hear a dial tone after these steps, you will need to contact your phone provider and they will check the external line.
My Caller Display Isn’t Working
A caller display or caller ID show’s you who is calling on your handset.
To use it, you’ll need a phone that has a screen to show the numbers that you’re calling or that are calling you. It won’t work if a phone number’s unavailable e.g. if it’s international or if the caller has withheld it.
You’ll also need a caller display as part of your phone package. Your phone may tell you if there is an option such as Call Features.
If your caller display is still blank, there’s no problem with the line itself, but your original phone isn’t working properly. So all you can do is get a replacement one.

My Phone Line Is Too Quiet
Simple checks, to complete first:
- If it’s a cordless phone make sure the phone is fully charged
- Check the volume settings on the handset
Note: If the volume is too quiet for a certain number, their line’s likely at fault and it will be their responsibility.
Once you’ve checked the charge and volume settings, try:
- Unplug everything that’s plugged into your phone sockets, TV boxes, fax machines etc.
- Plug a corded phone into the master socket (the master socket is the first socket where the phone line enters your home).
- Try to make a call.
If the volume has now been corrected, there’s no problem with the line, but your original phone isn’t working properly. We would recommend you get a replacement handset.
If the volume problem still exists, it would be best to contact your phone provider to see if there is an external fault.
